Empress Queen Popcorn- 武則天

Face& Body Painting by Mika Mitopia Art

A note on the valid issue of cultural appropriation vs. appreciation: This was an event organised by mainly queer Taiwanese folk in a Chinese speaking country for Chinese New Year and we were expected and encouraged to dress in the style of Chinese Empresses as part of the dress code. The theme for the night played on the word for “drag queen” in Mandarin, 變裝皇后, which literally translates as “transformation costume empress”. Everyone I’ve spoken to in relation to this event was absolutely supportive of us non-Taiwanese queens using elements of traditional period dress in our costumes (@台北爆米花’s robe is actually a copy of one from Chinese period drama Wu Ze Tian 武則天).

Us queens were all embracing and celebrating the rich culture of Taiwan with a gender bending twist, so this falls firmly in the camp of appreciation in this context! This ain’t a Native American headdress at Coachella.
